Critical Race Theory (CRT) has generated considerable public dialogue and controversy. But, what are critical theories? And how do they intersect with pharmacy education? This session will review basic tenets of common critical theories (e.g., CRT, Feminism, Queer Theory), explore their use in pharmacy education, and discuss how we can be use them to inform and influence pharmacy education.
Learning Objectives: At the end of the program, participants will be able to
- Define critical theory - including Critical Race Theory, Feminism, Queer Theory, and Intersectionality
- Describe the ways in which critical theories intersect with pharmacy education
- Prepare a reflexivity statement that acknowledges our role in criticality
Target Audience: This program is designed for all faculty, preceptors, staff, trainees, and students.
Registration: For non-UNC affiliates, registration is $15.00. (UNC affiliates are faculty, staff, trainees, students, preceptors and residents who currently work for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill or support its students.)

Kyle Fassett, PhD, MSEd, MA
Senior Research Associate, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Kyle Fassett, PhD, MSEd, MA is a Senior Research Associate for diversity, equity, and inclusion at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he conducts research to improve the retention of underrepresented students, staff and faculty. Dr. Fassett was the recipient of the 2022 Robert J. Menges New Researcher Award from American Educational Research Association (AERA). He completed a postdoctoral fellowship with the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy in the Center for Innovation Pharmacy Education & Research (CIPhER) after receiving his doctorate in higher education with a focus in educational psychology, measurement, and evaluation from Indiana University Bloomington.

Nicole Winston, PharmD, EdD
Associate Professor, Augusta University
Dr. Winston maintains active research in medical education and clinical pharmacy. She studies professional identity formation in healthcare students and clinicians, particularly in those who have been historically excluded from medicine. She has been recently recognized by her institution, receiving the 2021 Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Award and nationally/internationally, receiving research awards from AAMC and AMEE. As the Assistant Dean of Curriculum, she oversees the pre-clerkship case-based learning and simulation education curriculum.

Jacqui McLaughlin, PhD
Associate Professor, CIPhER Director, UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy
Dr. McLaughlin received her undergraduate degree in biological engineering from North Carolina State University, her master of science in biomedical engineering from the University of Memphis/University of Tennessee and her doctoral in educational research and policy analysis from North Carolina State University. She spent one year as a postdoctoral fellow with the Office of Strategic Planning and Assessment (OSPA) at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy and currently serves the school as an associate professor int he division of Practice Advancement and Clinical Education and as the director of CIPhER (Center for Innovative Pharmacy Education and Research).
