CIPhER Center for Innovative Pharmacy Education & Research

Competency-based Education in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Doctor of Pharmacy Programs

Spring 2022 CIPhER seminars will only be offered via Zoom.
12:00-1:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 11, 2022, via Zoom
There has been a resurgence of interest in the application of competency-based education (CBE) in health professionals’ education, including in pharmacy education and graduate education. “Competency-based pharmacy education (CBPE) is an outcomes-based curricular model of an organized framework of competencies (knowledge, skills, attitudes) for graduates to meet healthcare and societal needs. This learner-centered curricular model aligns authentic teaching and learning strategies and assessment and feedback, while de-emphasizing time.” This program will review historical and current drivers for curricular reform and the fundamental principles of CBE, discuss the potential role and value of CBE in pharmaceutical sciences and Doctor of Pharmacy programs, and identify current use and future opportunities for CBE.
The format of this CIPhER seminar will be discussion-based. Participants are strongly encouraged to review provided readings and resources prior to the session.
Learning Objectives:  At the end of this program, participants will be able to:
  1. Describe the historical and current drivers for curricular reform that are signposting the role of competency-based education
  2. Articulate the fundamental principles of competency-based education
  3. Discuss the potential role and value of competency-based education in pharmaceutical sciences and Doctor of Pharmacy programs
  4. Identify current use of competency-based education principles and reflect upon future opportunities for competency-based education in pharmaceutical sciences and Doctor of Pharmacy programs
