inclusifiED: Inclusive Teaching Practices Workshop

As prioritized in the Eshelman Strategic Plan, creating an equitable classroom environment is paramount to improving learning for all students.  In support of this effort, CIPhER is pleased to invite you to participate in inclusifiED: Inclusive Teaching Practices Workshop led by UNC Professors Kelly Hogan and Viji Sathy.  During this interactive workshop, participants will reflect on inequities and diversity in their classrooms through interactive, hands-on activities.  Drs. Hogan and Sathy with share their research results and provide a framework for inclusive design and participants will explore inclusive techniques though active learning exercises and case studies.  Participants will leave with approaches for inclusive learning that can be implemented with any discipline or class size aimed at helping students achieve to their potential. 
 
Learning Objectives: At the end of this program, participants will be able to:
  1. Describe inequities in your current classroom environment and their impact on student learning
  2. Define an effective framework for inclusive design
  3. Outline inclusive learning techniques which can be applied in the classroom to help students achieve to their potential
 
Target Audience:  This program is designed for faculty, staff and instructors who teach in a classroom environment.
 
Registration: For non-UNC affiliates, registration is $15.00.  (UNC Affiliates are faculty, staff, trainees, students, preceptors and residents who currently work for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill or support its students.)
 
REGISTRATION DEADLINE:  Tuesday, May 4, at 5 p.m.

 
The University Of North Carolina Eshelman School Of Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. ACPE program 0046-9999-21-066-L04-P provides 2.0 contact hour of continuing pharmacy education credit. To receive CE credit, participants must sign-in upon arrival (in class or online), attend the entire program and complete the evaluation within 60 days of the program date (included in LECE which will open after the workshop). Statements of credit can be viewed and printed in CPE Monitor in approximately 2 to 3 weeks. **No partial credit will be available**
 
 
 
 
Presenter Information
 
Kelly Hogan, PhD, STEM Teaching Professor in the Department of Biology & Associate Dean of the Office of Instructional Innovation and Director of the University's Quality Enhancement Plan
By demonstrating the effectiveness of Dr. Kelly Hogan’s methods in large lecture classes, her work has received national attention in publications such as The New York Times, The Atlantic and Insight Diversity.  Dr. Hogan works with many of Carolina’s faculty to help them re-imagine their teaching and she has also shared her techniques with educators from institutions across the state and nation. Her teaching has also impacted a student audience far beyond those in her UNC-Chapel Hill classes. As the co-author of several biology textbooks (Campbell Biology’s Concepts and Connections and Essential Biology), Hogan has reached hundreds of thousands of students globally. She has also been recognized by her students through nine different campus, state and national awards for teaching, mentoring and advising. Hogan was the commencement speaker for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2015. She has been a driver of institutional reform within STEM to ensure that the gateway science courses are taught with high structure, active learning. Hogan completed her undergraduate degree in biology at The College of New Jersey in Ewing, New Jersey (B.S. 1996) and earned her doctorate from UNC-Chapel Hill (Ph.D. 2001).
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Viji Sathy, PhD, Professor of the PRactice in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience, Faculty fellow for Inclusive Teaching in the Center for Faculty Excellence & Director of the Townsend Program for Educational Research
Dr. Viji Sathy is actively involved in instructional innovation and assisting colleagues in promoting evidence-based educational practices. She speaks to many groups nationally on the flipped classroom in higher education. Her research involves evaluating the impact of innovative teaching techniques as well as retention in STEM courses. Sathy is also the Program Evaluator of the Chancellor’s Science Scholars an adaptation of the Meyerhoff Scholarship at the University of Maryland Baltimore County that has successfully increased representation of underrepresented students in STEM PhDs. She teaches quantitative courses: statistical principles in psychological research and research methods. She is the recipient of numerous teaching awards, including the Tanner Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Education and the campus’ Student’s choice for Best Professor at UNC. Prior to her current position at UNC, she worked at the College Board conducting research on the SATs and non-cognitive predictors of college success. Sathy completed her undergraduate degree in psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC (B.S. 1996). Based largely on the experience she had in her undergraduate statistics course, she went on to earn her doctorate in psychometrics from UNC-Chapel Hill (Ph.D. 2003).

  • A Zoom link will be provided prior to the program via a confirmation email.  If you attend remotely via Zoom with a group, please email susan.charamut@unc.edu with the names of the attendees. To receive CE credit, you must be registered for the program and we must be able to tie your registration to your Zoom login (use your name).
  • Registration:  Non-UNC Affiliates are required to pay a fee of $15 to attend and earn CE credit.  When registering, you will be directed to a separate system for security purposes.  Please select "OK"  to be transered to the payment site and complete your registration.  Be sure the zip code associated with your credit card's billing address matches the zip code in your account.  If your registration is successful, you will be returned to this page and will see a note stating "You are registered for this program."  If you receive a blank screen, your registration and payment was not successful.
  • CE:  Participants requesting CE have 60 days from the program date to claim CE crediit and verify credit has been uploaded to your CPE monitor account.
