You will need to select your learning community when you register.
This program is designed to provide preceptors with a forum to discuss best practices in implementing layered learning in their practice settings. Preceptors will be discussing potential solutions to challenges encountered in layered learning environments with other preceptors in similar practice settings (separate sessions for ambulatory care, acute care, community, and health system learning communities). Some of the topics that will be discussed include logistics (space, orientation), feedback (feedback to multiple learners, feedback in a team environment), performance disparities, and appropriate learning activities
- Define the key attributes of the layered learning practice model
- Describe best practices for implementing the layered learning model in your practice site (health system, acute care, community, ambulatory care)
- Outline solutions to common challenges encountered in layered learning settings
Target Audience: This program is designed for preceptors who teach learners at different learning levels simultaneously (immersion students, advanced immersion students, residents, etc.).

The University Of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. ACPE program 0046-9999-21-012-L04-P provides 1.0 contact hours of continuing pharmacy education credit. To receive CE credit, participants must verify attendance, and complete the evaluation form(s) of this program. Participants must provide their name, email address, NABP e-Profile ID, and date of birth (MMDD) to receive credit. Statements of credit can be viewed and printed in CPE Monitor in approximately 2 to 3 weeks. It is the participant’s responsibility to check CPE Monitor to verify credit has been uploaded. Jill Bates, PharmD, MS, BCOP, FASHP, Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner, University of North Carolina Medical Center and Associate Professor of Clinical Education, UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy
Jill Bates is the national PHASER Pharmacy Program Manager for the Department of Veterans Affairs specializing in precision medicine. She is also Associate Professor of Clinical Education at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. Dr. Bates completed her Bachelor of Science at Eastern Illinois University, a Master of Science with concentration in biochemistry and biophysics at Northern Illinois University and her Doctor of Pharmacy at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She completed a post graduate year 1 (PGY1) pharmacy practice and PGY2 oncology pharmacy residency at Duke University Medical Center. Dr. Bates has experience as a leader in clinical pharmacy practice, oncology pharmacy, and residency training. She has a passion for advancing pharmacy practice through education rooted in the belief that learning improves lives.
Jordan Masterson, PharmD, BCPS,Clinical Pharmacist, Mission Hospital and Assistant Professor of Clinical Education, UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy
Jordan Masterson is a native of Western North Carolina and received her BS in biology with a minor in anthropology at UNC Chapel Hill in 2006. Following a year spent doing volunteer work with AmeriCorps and Outward Bound in Atlanta, GA, she returned to Chapel Hill and the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy to complete her PharmD in 2012. Dr. Masterson then pursued a PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC. Since that time, she has worked both as a member of the pharmacy float team and in adult medicine at Mission Hospital and is now Assistant Professor of Clinical Education with UNC ESOP. Dr. Masterson is a board certified pharmacotherapy specialist; her current areas of interest include adult and internal medicine, transitions of care, and geriatric medicine. Dr. Masterson also enjoys participating in global health volunteer missions and has traveled to Honduras and Guatemala to practice rural medicine. Outside of pharmacy, she enjoys cooking, reading, traveling, and spending time outdoors. Dr. Masterson is primarily involved in precepting the Immersion Health System and Advanced Immersion Health System experiences.
Tasha Michaels, PharmD, BCACP, Director of Clinical Services, Sona Pharmacy
Natasha (Tasha) Michaels, PharmD, BCACP is the Director of Clinical Services at Sona Pharmacies and Sona Benefits. She received her doctor of pharmacy from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy (2007). Michaels completed her PGY1 community pharmacy residency at Kerr Drug in Raleigh and UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy (2008). She also became board certified in ambulatory care in 2012. Michaels serves as the site coordinator for the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy PGY1 community-based pharmacy residency program at Sona Pharmacy + Clinic. She has precepted various levels of learners (early immersion and advanced students, PGY1 and PGY2 residents, and fellows) in a layer learning model as well as individually.
Irene Ulrich, PharmD, BCACP, CPP, Clinical Pharmacist, MAHEC and Associate Professor of Clinical Education, UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy
Irene Park Ulrich received herPharmD from the University of North Carolina in 2012, and went on to complete a PGY1 residency in ambulatory care pharmacy at Mission Hospital and MAHEC in Asheville, NC. She currently works at MAHEC as a clinical pharmacist providing direct patient care at two MAHEC satellite offices. She is a preceptor for immersion and advanced immersion pharmacy students, as well for both PGY1 and PGY2 ambulatory care pharmacy practice residents. Ulrich is also the Director of the PGY2 Ambulatory Care Residency at the Mountain Area Health Education Center and the UNC Eshelman School of pharmacy. She is passionate about ambulatory pharmacy practice models and caring for underserved groups, in particular LGBTQ+ populations. She is also an associate professor of clinical education with the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy and is a primary preceptor for the pharmacy Rural Health Scholars program at the UNC-Asheville satellite campus. Additionally, she is an animal lover and has 2 dogs, 2 donkeys and 4 goats.
W. Scott Wilkie, PharmD, MS, BS, BPCS, Clinical Pharmacist Faculty, Mission Hospital and Assistant Professor of Clinical Education, UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy
Scott Wilkie received his PharmD from the University of Houston in 2011. He completed a PGY1 Pharmacy Practice and a PGY2 Internal Medicine residencies at the UK HealthCare in Lexington, KY. He currently works at Mission Health System as a clinical pharmacist providing direct patient care on adult medicine. Dr. Wilkie is primarily involved in precepting students in their Direct Patient Care Immersion Experience and General Medicine Advanced Immersion Experience rotations. His personal interests include just relaxing in western North Carolina mountains
Charlene Williams, PharmD, BCACP, CDCES, Director of Preceptor Development and Clinical Assistant Professor, Practice Advancement and Clinical Education
Charlene Williams completed her Doctor of Pharmacy at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed an ASHP-accredited specialty residency in primary care at Mission Hospital and the Mountain Area Health Education Center. Currently, she is Director of Preceptor Development and a clinical assistant professor at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. Dr. Williams is a Certified Diabetes Educator and is board certified in ambulatory care pharmacy by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties. She has prior experience starting hospital-based and primary-care pharmacotherapy clinics, serving as a residency director and preceptor, and working in an ADA-accredited diabetes education center.
