Creating an Inclusive Learning Environment in the Residential Setting

Inclusive teaching and learning practices are instrumental in creating and maintaining a learning environment where all participants are fully engaged and respected, and where all participants are open to ideas, perspectives, and ways of thinking that are distinct from their own. These practices support meaningful and accessible learning for all students. This session will consist of discussion and strategies aimed at creating inclusive learning.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this program, participants will be able to:

Recognize examples of unconscious bias, stereotype threat, privilege, and microaggressions, both in themselves and in others
Explain how inclusive classroom practices positively impact student learning and how the lack of inclusivity or the presence of unconscious bias might negatively impact the student experience
Obtain strategies to implement and facilitate inclusive pedagogical practices in teaching and course design

Agenda:

12:00 pm – 12:15 pm: Level setting on definitions around inclusive learning practices

12:15 pm – 12:35 pm: Small group and large group discussion on inclusive learning practices scenarios

12:35 pm – 12:50 pm: Small group and large group discussion on ensuring classroom patient cases are racially and culturally sensitive

12:50 pm – 1:00 pm: Additional tips and Q&A

Target Audience: This program is designed for all faculty, staff and trainees.

The University Of North Carolina Eshelman School Of Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. ACPE program 0046-9999-20-236--L04-P provides 1.0 contact hour of continuing pharmacy education credit. To receive CE credit, participants must sign-in upon arrival (in class or online), attend the entire program and complete the evaluation within 60 days of the program date (included in LECE which will open after the workshop). Statements of credit can be viewed and printed in CPE Monitor in approximately 2 to 3 weeks. **No partial credit will be available**

Presenter Information

Suzanne Harris, PharmD, Assistant Professor & Well being and Resiliency Director

Suzanne Harris is an assistant professor in the Division of Practice Advancement and Clinical Education at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy and a board-certified psychiatric pharmacist. Her practice site is with UNC Hospital and Clinics, and she serves as a preceptor for pharmacy students and residents. Harris is the UNC Director of Well-being and Resiliency and is a certified trainer for Mental Health First Aid. Harris’ career and research interests are focused on stigma and mental health and their relation to overall wellness in pharmacy students and pharmacists, transitions of care and cultural competency in psychiatric patients, and innovative practice models and teaching strategies. Harris serves in leadership roles and is an active member of several national organizations, with invited speaking engagements on mental health and well-being.

Carla White, BS Pharm, RPh, Associate Dean of Organizational Diversity and Inclusion

Carla White is the Associate Dean for Organizational Diversity and Inclusion and is responsible for developing the vision, mission and a comprehensive strategy for leveraging diverse backgrounds, perspectives and experiences to optimize organizational effectiveness. In her role, she works broadly to create and sustain a mindset of diversity and inclusion in everything that we do to advance the School’s vision and become a national model to impact human health worldwide. Dean White has achieved national prominence for her work, including numerous invited speaking engagements and publishing a number of peer-reviewed articles on leadership, strategic planning, communication, diversity, and education.
