CIPhER Summer 2020 Series - Online Learning


In keeping with policies resulting from COVID-19, this program will be only offered via Zoom.
 
This program is a 5-program series focused on online learning.  You may register for all or some of the programs in this series.  CIPhER e-certificates will be provided for individuals who complete in all 5 programs and the corresponding evaluations.
 
CIPhER is pleased to announce a summer series focused on teaching and learning within a synchronous online classroom environment.  Individual topics are centered on incorporating logistical and operational aspects of preparing and supporting graduate and professional curricula faculty for online learning.
 
Target Audience:  This program is designed for all faculty, preceptors and trainees who have or will teach in a virtual setting.

 
Series Information
June 12, 2020, 12:00 – 1:30 pm, A Lightning Round of Ideas and Lessons Learned with Transition to online Learning
During this program, an overview of online learning will be described. Additionally, in order to build a community and generate ideas, graduate and professional curricula faculty will be solicited to share ideas and lessons learned during the transition to online classes.  These can include experiences from the spring 2020 transition, planning for the potential fall 2020 online format, and/or general pearls related to teaching in a virtual setting.  Presentations will be grouped in themes in a lightning round format.

June 26, 2020, 12:00 – 1:00 pm, Panel Session on Online Practices Across UNC Health Sciences (1.0 Hour of CE available)
During this program, a panel discussion with members from the experiential environment and other UNC health sciences schools on campus will share their experiences with online learning.
 
July 10, 2020, 12:00 – 1:00 pm, Content Creation and Delivery for Online Learning (1.0 Hour of CE available)
During this program, participants will review evidence-based practices for content creation and delivery in a virtual setting.  They will explore various strategies that have been utilized on campus and different format possibilities available with campus technology.
 
July 24, 2020, 12:00 – 1:00 pm, Maintaining Student Engagement in a Distance or Virtual Setting (1.0 Hour of CE available)
During this program, participants will review evidence-based practices for student engagement in virtual and distance education.  They will engage in discussion with their colleagues about successes and challenges experienced while teaching in a video-connected setting and will explore best practices in teaching that can be leveraged in virtual and distance education.  This program will primarily focus on a virtual or distance synchronous classroom environment.
 
July 31, 2020, 12:00 – 1:00 pm, Assessment of Student Learning in an online Setting (1.0 Hour of CE available)
During this program, participants will review evidence-based practices for delivering assessments in the virtual setting.  Various assessment strategies will be discussed.  Additional practices to help ensure assessment integrity will be shared.  This program will primarily focus on written and multichoice assessments.

 
Some of the programs in this series offer CE as noted above.
The University Of North Carolina Eshelman School Of Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. To receive CE credit, participants must sign-in upon arrival (in class or online), attend the entire program and complete the evaluation within 60 days of the program date (included in LECE which will open after the workshop).. Paul Wolff, EdD
Instructional Design Manager, The Carolina Office for Online Learning
Paul Wolff is a highly motivated educator and a lifelong learner. Paul holds a BA in History, an MA in Teaching, and an MS in Information Science, all from UNC-Chapel Hill.  He recently earned an EdD with a focus in Educational Technology from the University of Florida. Paul’s research interests include gamification, game-based learning, and distance education. He spends his free time hiking and camping with his wife, two dogs, and cat. Stephanie Kiser
Clinical Assistant Professor
Stephanie Kiser is the Director for Rural Health & Wellness for the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy.  As a faculty member on the Asheville campus, she leads the Rural Pharmacy Health Scholars program, and teaches within the Leadership and Professional Development (LPD) Course Stream within the core curriculum.  In her role as Course Director and Instructor in two LPD courses within a synchronous, video connected classroom, she has explored a variety of strategies to engage learners and partner with fellow Chapel Hill faculty.   Working to create a meaningful student experience, while also gaining knowledge in how to “show up” on camera and create dialogue across a screen have become an emphasis in her personal faculty development.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Amanda Savage, PharmD
Clinical Assistant Professor & CIPhER Faculty Fellow
Amanda Savage, PharmD, is a Clinical Assistant Professor and a Faculty Fellow of the Center for Innovative Pharmacy Education and Research at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. She received her PharmD from UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy in 2003 and spent 13 years in community practice in Western North Carolina. As a faculty member, her efforts have been focused in teaching: course coordination and development, didactic teaching and small group facilitation. Her main research interests include development and implementation of objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs).

Peter Halpin, MSc, PhD, Associate Professor & Program Coordinator for Learning Sciences and Psychological Studies, UNC School of Education
Peter Halpin, MSc, PhD, specializes in psychometrics and educational measurement. He earned his Ph.D. from Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada. Prior to joining UNC, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Amsterdam, and an assistant/associate professor at New York University.  The overall goal of Dr. Halpin’s research is to develop innovative and rigorous statistical methodology to address pressing issues that arise in educational research, practice, and policy.
