Cross Cultural Classroom Engagement: Perspectives from the Health Science Schools

Inclusive teaching and learning practices are instrumental in creating and maintaining a learning environment where all participants are fully engaged and respected, and where all participants are open to ideas, perspectives, and ways of thinking that are distinct from their own. These practices support meaningful and accessible learning for all students. This session will consist of panelists that are engaged in creating inclusive learning.

Carla White is the Associate Dean for Organizational Diversity and Inclusion and is responsible for developing the vision, mission and a comprehensive strategy for leveraging diverse backgrounds, perspectives and experiences to optimize organizational effectiveness. In her role, she works broadly to create and sustain a mindset of diversity and inclusion in everything that we do to advance the School’s vision and become a national model to impact human health worldwide. Dean White has achieved national prominence for her work, including numerous invited speaking engagements and publishing a number of peer-reviewed articles on leadership, strategic planning, communication, diversity, and education.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Emily Boehm came to Carolina in August from a position at Duke as an instructor of Evolutionary Anthropology, where she redesigned her courses around active learning and inclusive pedagogy. Dr. Boehm was a Teaching for Equity Fellow while at Duke, engaged in a year-long cohort exploring the role of race and racism in our classrooms and on campus. At UNC, she is a Faculty Development Consultant where she continues to promote and support active and inclusive teaching among Carolina faculty.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Chris Faison currently serves as the Coordinator for UNC Men of Color Engagement in the College of Arts & Sciences. A double-graduate of UNC, Chris is committed to expanding educational opportunities for students who are perceived to be on the fringes of society. His spectrum of experiences include: secondary school teaching and educational administration, financial aid, and policy analysis for former NC State Senator Angela Bryant. Chris has also served as an E.A. Morris Fellow & Emerging Leader where he worked to address problems in nonprofit, education, and government through collaborations in public and private sectors; and as a National Governors Association (NGA) Scholar with the NGA Center for Best Practices in the Education Division.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Raul Necochea is an Associate Professor in the Department of Social Medicine at the UNC School of Medicine. His research deals with the history of medicine and science. He is the author of A History of Family Planning in Twentieth Century Peru (UNC Press, 2014), and is working on a new book on the history of cervical cancer in Latin America. He teaches and mentors students in all four years of medical school and in the College of Arts and Sciences.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Brenda Mitchell is Associate Chair for Student Services and AHEC Operations in the Department of Allied Health Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  In this role, she oversees aspects of student clinical rotations and arranges for faculty to present continuing education programs as requested by the regional AHECs throughout the state.  She has maintained a faculty appointment in the Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences since 1996 and has taught undergraduate and graduate levels in Speech Language Pathology.
