Graduate Education at UNC: Use and Format of Dissertation Committees

Dissertation committees serve a vital role within graduate education. Members of a student’s dissertation committee serve multiple roles, including serving in a mentoring capacity, offering constructive feedback on the student’s research and writing, guiding revision efforts, supervising the student’s dissertation work, and, ultimately, determining the acceptability of the dissertation. While these roles may be universally accepted across graduate education, experiences across programs may differ in how dissertation committees are constructed and used within the program and how conflicts are managed. During this program, panelists from across the University will share their experiences with the use of dissertation committees within their PhD programs through open discussion.

Learning Objectives: At the end of the program, participants will be able to

Describe experiences with dissertation committees within PhD programs across UNC
Discuss potential modifications to practices relating to the use of dissertation committees within the PhD program

Target Audience: This program is designed for Division Directors, faculty, staff, preceptors, and fellows who support graduate education.

The University Of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. ACPE program 0046-9999-23-101-L99-P provides 1.0 contact hours of continuing pharmacy education credit. To receive CE credit, participants must sign-in upon arrival (in class or online), attend the entire program and complete the evaluation within 60 days of the program date (included in LECE which will open after the workshop). Statements of credit can be viewed and printed in CPE Monitor in approximately 2 to 3 weeks. **No partial session credit will be given**

Presenters:

Michael Jarstfer, PhD, Assistant Dean for Graduate Education & Associate Professor, UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy

As Assistant Dean for Graduate Education, Mike Jarstfer is the Director of Graduate Studies for Pharmaceutical Sciences PhD Program and in this role advances innovative approaches to enhance graduate training. The Jarstfer lab is interested in targeting telomere biology for aging disorders and cancer treatment strategies and exploring the mechanism of oxytocin in controlling social behavior.

Robert Bourret, PhD, Professor, UNC School of Medicine

Robert Bourret, PhD is a Professor and the Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology within the UNC School of Medicine. The Bourret Lab investigates the molecular mechanisms of transient protein phosphorylation in two-component regulatory systems, which are found in bacteria, archaea, eukaryotic microorganisms, and plants. Dr. Bourret received his PhD in microbiology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Prior to arriving at UNC, Dr. Bourret served as a research fellow at the California Institute of Technology.

Daniel McKay, PhD, Associate Professor, UNC School of Medicine

Daniel McKay, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Biology and Genetics within the UNC School of Medicine. The McKay lab focuses on how a single genome gives rise to a variety of cell types and body parts during development. Dr. McKay received his PhD in Developmental Genetics from Columbia University and completed his postdoctoral training at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill.

Meghan Rebuli, PhD, Assistant Professor, UNC School of Medicine

Meghan Rebuli, PhD is an Assistant Professor within the Center for Environmental Medicine, Asthma, and Lung Biology and the Director of Graduate Studies in the Curriculum in Toxicology & Environmental Medicine within the UNC School of Medicine. The Rebuli Lab focuses on investigating sex specific effects of air pollutants and new and emerging tobacco products on pulmonary health. Dr. Rebuli received her PhD in Neuroendocrinology from North Carolina State University and completed her postdoctoral training at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill.

Qisheng Zhang, PhD, Associate Professor, UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy

Qisheng Zhang, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Division of Chemical Biology and Medicinal Chemistry at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. The Zhang lab studies lipid signaling pathways that are involved in development and diseases by developing novel chemical probes and technologies. Dr. Zhang received his PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh and completed his postdoctoral training at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California.
